Medvedev praises Russia's victorious athletics team after 2010 EAC

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday met with the national athletics team, which finished first in the medal standings at the recent European Athletics Championships in Spain's Barcelona.
"Many expected this victory. But expectations are one thing and medals are another. Twenty four medals, including ten gold, is a brilliant result of our team," Medvedev told the athletes.
The Russian team brought home 10 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals from the 2010 EAC in Barcelona, which was held from July 26 to August 1. Russia's closest competitor was France, with 8 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals.
"You performed beautifully; well done! Of course I hope this is a good start to preparations for the forthcoming Olympics [in 2012] and other competitions," Medvedev said.
The president said the value of medals increases every year as they get harder and harder to win.
"The dominance of a particular team is very rare so seeing so many medals is particularly pleasant," he said. RIA Novosti
