Mexico fires more than 3,000 police

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Mexican officials say about 3,200 federal police officers have been fired since May for failure to perform duties or for possible corruption.

Federal Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas said criminal charges have been brought against 465 of the fired officers, CNN reported Monday.

In addition, Rosas said, another 1,020 officers face disciplinary proceedings for failing work-related exams.

Among the officers who were fired were officials in Ciudad Juarez publicly accused by fellow officers of corruption several weeks ago, he said.

The fired officers made up about 9 percent of the federal police force, which has about 34,500 officials. UPI
