MIT grad denies role in Afghan war leaks

BOSTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A former MIT student confirmed he was in contact with the soldier charged with funneling classified U.S. records from Afghanistan to the WikiLeaks Web site.

The 23-year-old graduate, who declined to be named, told the Boston Globe he met Pvt. Bradley Manning at MIT and exchanged a number of e-mails with him in the period leading up to the release of the Afghan reports this summer.

The Globe Sunday said the former student insisted he had not assisted Manning or WikiLeaks in funneling the material to the media and general public. "I did not help him or know about it before it happened," he said.

The former student said he was interviewed several months ago by Army investigators, who were looking for anyone in the computer hacking community who might have been involved with Manning and WikiLeaks. He said he knew people who worked with WikiLeaks, but did not take part in the actual leaks.
