Party decries violence in Indian state

NEW DELHI, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The extent of violence in the northern India state of Jammu and Kashmir has prompted a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader to criticize the government.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said there was "no justification whatsoever" for 62 people to die since June 11 when a teenage male was killed after he allegedly was struck by a tear gas shell near Rajouri Kadal, Press Trust of India reported Monday.

Protests and rioting have been going on since.

"We also feel that the central government and the state government of Jammu and Kashmir have tried to deal with it (unrest) as a purely law and order issue and resorted to administrative measures," Karat said. UPI
