Srinagar, India (CNN) -- At least 80 people were killed and more than 200 injured early Friday when heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in the frontier town of Leh, police said.
The death toll is likely to rise, said Officer Farooq Ahmad.
The town is nearly 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Srinagar.
The rain came shortly after midnight and took sleeping residents by surprise.
Army Lt. Col. J.S.Brar said 6,000 soldiers were deployed in the relief efforts. Helicopters have also been called in as damaged roads made it difficult to reach the affected areas. CNN
