Report: Karzai arranged release of aide

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai arranged the release of a top aide, Mohammad Zia Selahi, after the aide was arrested on corruption charges, officials say.

Selahi was charged with seeking a bribe when he was arrested by a U.S.-backed task force. Afghan officials told The Washington Post he was the target of a wider investigation, with allegations that included telephone communications with the Taliban and dispensing cash, Landcruisers and Lexus cars to Karzai allies.

"He was one of the most trusted staff members in the palace to do special things," one official told the Post.

A commission created by Karzai concluded after Selahi was freed that his rights had been violated. UPI
