Rural N.Y. car crash kills three friends

OAKFIELD, N.Y., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Investigators say speed and alcohol appear to have had a role in a crash in rural western New York that killed three people returning home from a local festival.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office said Sunday the victims were returning from the Elba Onion Festival early Saturday when their Scion TC appeared to go off the road, blast through a sign and a power pole and then roll over.

Investigators said two of the victims – Joshua Durham, 21, Basom; and Matthew Ware, 22, Oakfield – were pronounced dead at the scene. Durham's girlfriend, Allyson Galens, 20, Stanley, died a short time later at a nearby hospital.

The Buffalo (N.Y.) Daily News said Sunday that all three had been top-notch athletes in multiple sports during their high school days and in junior colleges. UPI
