SEOUL, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The South Korean navy honed its anti-submarine techniques in the Yellow Sea Sunday as five days of exercises wound down, military officials said.
The night exercises focused on sonar detection of subs and torpedoes in the aftermath of the March sinking of the warship Cheonan, which Seoul contends was the result of a North Korean submarine attack.
"All naval vessels equipped with sonar have participated in the nighttime exercises," a military spokesman told the Yonhap news service. "The ongoing no-moonlight period seems to have added to the effectiveness of the large-scale training".
Yonhap said South Korean commanders believe the Cheonan was sunk by a sub that entered South Korean waters under cover of darkness.
North Korea loudly objected to the exercises prior to their start; however, there has thus far been no response beyond words from the North. UPI
