Yemeni soldier killed in Abyan province

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Gunmen killed a Yemeni soldier in the restive province of Abyan outside his home as security forces go on high alert during Ramadan, a source said.

Yemen's official Saba news agency reported that gunmen shot and killed a soldier outside of his home in the coastal province of Abyan. An anonymous source to the news agency added that terrorists have stormed a police station in the area, injuring a security director.

The Yemeni interior minister warned security forces Monday to go on high alert during the holy month of Ramadan, which began last week.

The warning mentioned Abyan as a source of a potential terrorist attack that would threaten the stability of the country during the holy season.

Yemen is struggling to control a violent secessionist movement in the south of the country. North and south Yemen united in 1990, though a civil war in 1994 threatened the unification effort. UPI
