Apathy, boycott sink Moldova referendum

CHISINAU, Moldova, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Officials blamed voter indifference for the failure of a referendum in Moldova to break a political deadlock.

The east European country has been without a president for a year, but still not enough voters went to the polls Sunday to resolve the crisis, Radio France Internationale reported Monday.

Provisional results indicate only 30 percent of the country's eligible voters turned out for the referendum. The law requires a 33 percent turnout for the result to count.

The country's ruling liberal coalition proposed the constitutional referendum, which leaders said would have introduced direct election of the president by voters. The Western-leaning coalition failed to raise the necessary three-fifths majority for its presidential candidate in Parliament, which has a large Communist minority, RFI said.
