Clausen to start Sunday for Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Rookie Jimmy Clausen will be given the starting quarterback assignment for the Carolina Panthers next week against Cincinnati, Panthers Coach John Fox said.

Fox said he was putting Clausen in for Matt Moore, who completed 40.8 percent of his passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions in Carolina's first two games this season. The Panthers lost both.

Clausen, who turns 23 Tuesday, was the 48th overall pick in this year's NFL draft after a collegiate career at Notre Dame. He passed for 8,148 yards and 60 touchdowns in three seasons as the Fighting Irish quarterback.

He appeared late in both of Carolina's games this season. He was 7-of-13 for 59 yards in Sunday's 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay. He was also intercepted once.

Moore was installed as the Panthers' starting quarterback for the final three games of last season and Carolina cut former starter Jake Delhomme in the off-season.
