Colombian drug boss faces charges in Miami

MIAMI, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A Colombian drug boss appeared before a Miami federal magistrate after being flown to the United States from Venezuela to face cocaine trafficking charges.

Prosecutors said they would seek pre-trial detention of Jaime Alberto Marin-Zamora, whom they accused of conspiring to distribute thousands of kilos of cocaine in his homeland and knowing the drugs would be smuggled into the United States, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Marin-Zamora was arrested Thursday on Margarita Island, a resort destination in Venezuela. Authorities agreed turn him over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has had shaky relations with Venezuela in fighting Colombian drug cartels.

The 48-year-old Marin-Zamora, known as "Beto," will have a detention hearing Friday and arraignment Nov. 1, the Herald said. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
