Denver may soon allow service pit bulls

DENVER, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Denver is considering changing its pit bull ban to allow members of the breed trained as service animals to live in the city.

Nancy Severson, manager of environmental health services, told The Denver Post the ordinance to be considered next week would bring the city in line with the U.S. Justice Department's take on the Americans With Disabilities Act.

"As far as the ADA, it's now pretty black and white, according to what the U.S. Department of Justice has prepared," Severson said. "If it's a service dog, and they claim it's a service dog, and the dog is providing the support for a disability, we will have to honor that".

That is good news for Glenn Belcher, a veteran of the first Iraq war, who moved to Denver in 2005 with his service dog, Sky. Belcher and two other pit bull owners sued the city, and he won a temporary restraining order allowing him to keep Sky until the dispute is resolved.
