Gaza court hands down death sentence

GAZA, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A Gaza military court handed down a death sentence to a Palestinian suspected of collaborating with Israel, officials said.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights condemned the sentence imposed Thursday, calling it unconstitutional, Ma'an news agency said.

Officials at Gaza's Ministry of Interior said the suspect was one of many arrested in recent raids by Hamas security forces in the Gaza Strip who are accused of assisting Israel, especially during the Israeli offensive in Gaza last year in which more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed, the agency said.

Ministry officials said some of those arrested were former Palestinian Authority employees who worked in the security forces and coordinated security with Israel after the Oslo Accords.

"The law is above all and none can take it into his own hands," Ehab al-Ghusein a ministry spokesman told the agency. He refused to say exactly how many were arrested but said a "large number" had been detained.
