Injured U.S. Senate candidate dies

LARGO, Md., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The Green Party candidate for a U.S. Senate seat from Maryland has died less than two days after being hit by a car while riding a bicycle, police say.

Natasha Pettigrew, 30, was critically injured when a sport-utility vehicle struck her bike near Largo early Sunday morning, The Washington Post reported.

Maryland State Police said Pettigrew died at Prince George's Hospital late Monday night from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Christy R. Littleford, 41, told police she thought she had hit an animal and didn't realize what happened until she arrived home and found Pettigrew's bike trapped under her car.

Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed.

Co-chairman Brian Bittner of the Maryland Green Party said Pettigrew had "incredible potential" as a future leader of both the party and the state.
