GAZA, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- The Israeli Army said it is investigating the death of a Palestinian fisherman off Gaza whose boat entered a restricted area and came under fire.
Mohammed Bakhar, 20, was shot in the chest by fire from a navy patrol boat, the Ma'an news agency said.
The army said the navy fired deterrent shots at a fishing boat early Friday after it drifted into a restricted area. The army said it was unaware a civilian had been killed and was investigating the matter.
The news agency quoted a military spokesman as saying when the boat ignored the warning shots, soldiers fired directly at the vessel and the boat returned to open waters within the three nautical mile fishing limit.
