Mortar shell narrowly misses kindergarten

JERUSALEM, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A mortar shell fired from Gaza exploded near several day care centers in a kibbutz in southern Israel, causing damage but no injuries, the Israeli Army said.

The shell exploded half an hour before children were due to arrive at the centers located in the Sha'ar Hanegev region Wednesday morning, kibbutz residents told Ynetnews.com

One of the residents said the mortar shell exploded 330 feet from their house. "The blast was so powerful it set off the car alarms. It was very frightening," the site quoted the resident saying.

Only one of the day care centers has a protective roof, but the walls have not been reinforced, residents said. They called on the government to fortify all of the day care centers on the kibbutz, and reinforce the walls in addition to the roofs, Ynetnews said.
