Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) -- Nigeria's electoral commission is seeking to postpone the presidential election until around April to give it adequate time for preparation, a spokesman said Wednesday.
The leader of the Independent National Electoral Commission met with political parties and they decided that two or three months will help give election officials more time to prepare, said Ayode Idowu, a commission spokesman.
The election commission will now consult with the National Assembly and the executive arm of government, the spokesman said.
Contenders are seeking to replace President Umaru Yar'Adua, who died earlier this year after a long illness.
President Goodluck Jonathan has already declared he is running. Nigeria's national security adviser also resigned from his post to run in the 2011 presidential election.
