San Bruno blast, fire 'horrible tragedy'

SAN BRUNO, Calif., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A gas-line explosion in San Bruno, Calif., killed at least one person, injured many others, destroyed numerous homes and set off a massive fire, officials said.

"It's a horrible tragedy for the people of San Bruno," said acting Gov. Abel Maldonado.

At least 53 homes were leveled by the explosion that consumed a residential neighborhood of the San Francisco suburb Thursday evening, forcing residents to flee and leaving about 23 people hurt, the Los Angles Times reported Friday.

The blast sparked a wind-driven fire that destroyed or damaged more than 170 homes, set treetops ablaze and lit the sky for miles.

Officials said crews hadn't been able to enter the fire zone to search for people who may have been trapped.
