School district sued for mosque field trip

WELLESLEY, Mass., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A Boston-area middle school field trip to a Muslim mosque violated the students' civil rights, a lawyer for one of the parents argued in a lawsuit.

Robert Meltzer, a Framingham, Mass., a constitutional law lawyer, said the Wellesley School District's May field trip to a mosque violated the sixth-grade students' First Amendment rights because they were too young to sanction the religious message, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Meltzer said a mother allegedly recorded five boys participating in an Islamic prayer service, arguing that, even if students hadn't bowed their heads during the service, the trip still would have been inappropriate.

"We view this as a very simple constitutional law case," said Meltzer. "We believe that a school cannot bring middle-school children to any house of worship. Period".
