(CNN) -- Suicide bombers driving a pair of civilian cars disguised as government vehicles slammed into the main gate at Somalia's main airport Thursday, a spokesman for the African Union said.
Four bombers, two in each car, and two African Union peacekeepers were killed; three African Union troops were wounded, said Maj. Berigye Bohuko in a telephone interview from Mogadishu.
"There were two vehicles and they tried to force their way through at our first checkpoint near the airport, but they failed in doing so and exploded there," he said, speaking from the checkpoint where the explosion occurred.
Mogadishu's Aden Ade airport is one of the areas most guarded by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers in the city, Bohuko said.
The attack came a day after Somalia's transitional government issued a statement warning that Al-Shabaab, the militant movement linked to al Qaeda that controls much of southern Somalia and portions of Mogadishu, may stage a final surge as part of the group's Ramadan offensive against the government and AMISOM forces. Al-Shabaab has intensified its attacks during the Islamic holy month.
