Suspect allegedly admits extortion

HAGUE, Netherlands, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- The man suspected in the disappearance of a U.S. teen allegedly said he extorted money from her family, De Telegraaf newspaper says.

Joran van der Sloot allegedly said he took money from the family of Natalee Holloway in exchange for information about the location of her remains, Radio Netherlands said Monday. He is also charged in the killing of another woman.

Holloway disappeared on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005, and van der Sloot allegedly admitted he extorted money from her family in an interview with a reporter from the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Radio Netherlands said.

Van der Sloot is also a suspect in the killing of Peruvian Stephany Flores three months ago. He allegedly admitted to killing both women, later retracting his statements.

U.S. authorities have filed an extradition request with the Peruvian government, where van der Sloot is in custody in the Flores killing.
