NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is allowed to vote in November general elections, witnesses in Myanmar said Friday.
Authorities in Myanmar said the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient couldn't vote in the November elections because prisoners were barred from the political process under national law.
Witnesses told the BBC, however, that her name is on the voter list for the elections, the first such election in 20 years.
Suu Kyi led her National League for Democracy to a decisive victory in 1990. The military junta in Myanmar never recognized the outcome, however. She has been under house arrest for nearly 15 years.
Military leaders in Myanmar said the general election was meant to usher in a new era of civilian leadership in the country. Critics complain the election process is controlled by military authorities, who are guaranteed a 20 percent allocation of the seats in parliament.
