TS Hermine threatens Mexico, Texas

MIAMI, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Storm warnings were posted along the coasts of Mexico and southern Texas Monday after a tropical depression grew into Tropical Storm Hermine, forecasters said.

Mexico's Civil Protection Agency issued warnings against marine activities, saying oil platforms in the area should prepare for stormy weather, CNN reported.

"This system will represent high danger for the northeastern part of the country in the beginning of the week," the agency said.

Hermine, the eighth tropical storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, was about 190 miles east-southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and 235 miles southeast of La Pesca, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 a.m. EDT advisory. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, was moving north at 8 mph.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the Mexican coast from Tampico to the mouth of the Rio Grande River, and along the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Baffin Bay. The NHC said additional watches or warnings could be posted for parts of southern Texas as Hermine moves.
