(CNN) -- The toll from from typhoon Fanapi has climbed to 33 dead and 42 people missing in southern China, state media said Thursday.
The typhoon has affected more than 1 million people and forced the evacuations of 78,400 more, China Daily reported.
Fanapi battered parts of Guangdong province Tuesday. It was the 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year, causing an estimated $300 million in direct economic losses.
Some parts of Guangdong reported 640 mm (25.2 inches) of rain in 24 hours, provincial flood control headquarters said in a statement. In flooded towns such as Sanjia, water stood chest-high and residents fled for higher ground or to the upper stories of buildings.
Before reaching China, Fanapi was blamed in the accidental deaths of at least three people Saturday in Taiwan, according to Taiwan's official news agency.
