Alonso leads F1 championship after rain-lashed Korean GP

(CNN) -- Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is top of the Formula 1 championship following an exciting but rain-hit inaugural Korean Grand Prix Sunday.
The race, overshadowed by wet conditions throughout, saw Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who began in pole position, and Mark Webber both fail to finish.
Lewis Hamilton was 14.9 seconds behind Alonso in second, with Felipe Massa third, Michael Schumacher fourth and Robert Kubica fifth.
Adverse weather proved the biggest factor for drivers, with the race halted after three laps as rain lashed the Korea International Circuit at Yeongam-gun.
The race began again just under an hour later, albeit with the safety car deployed until the 17th lap.
The championship now heads for the penultimate race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix on November 7, with Alonso on 231 points, 11 points ahead of Webber on 220, with Hamilton on 210 and Vettel on 206.
Red Bull still lead the constructors' table on 426 points, with McLaren-Mercedes on 399 and Ferrari on 374.
