British WWII veteran gets holiday after 71-year wait

A British D-Day veteran has enjoyed an overdue getaway after a hotel on the Isle of Wight honored a 71-year-old credit note.
Les Townsend, 89, booked a holiday at the Yellands Chalet Hotel in September 1939 but it had to close down due to the outbreak of World War II.
Townsend found a credit note for his 10 shillings deposit during a clear-out. He said he showed it to his son, who suggested they get in touch with the Chalet Hotel, now the Bembridge Coast Hotel, to see if the credit was still valid.
"I showed it to one of my sons and his wife and she said they might be interested in the receipt," BBC quoted Townsend as saying.
"We were delighted to hear of the story and gave him a free holiday with no extra charges by accepting the credit note," manager Phil Howden said.
Townsend was joined to his first ever trip to the Isle of Wight by his wife, his son, and his daughter-in-law.
