Canadian commander admits killing women

BELLEVILLE, Ontario, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The former commander of Canada's largest air force base pleaded guilty Thursday to killing two women near the base.

Lawyer Michael Edelson told the court Col. Russell Williams, 47, would not dispute the charges of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of sexual assault and forcible confinement and a string of 82 break-ins, the Toronto Globe & Mail reported.

Williams said nothing during the proceedings in the courtroom in Belleville, Ontario, about a two-hour drive east of Toronto, reports said.

Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of air force flight attendant Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 37, who worked out of Canadian Forces Base Trenton, and Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville.

He has also been charged with home-invasion sex attacks on two women in September 2009 in eastern Ontario and 82 breaking and entering charges.

Williams was arrested Feb. 7 while he was still in command of the Trenton base. Since his incarceration, he has attempted suicide and is now under supervision in a segregated cell, the report said.
