DETROIT, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A Detroit-area woman is guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse in the death of her newborn daughter, a jury said.
Emily Portello, 30, could be face life in prison when she is sentenced Oct. 27, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Jurors rejected a prosecutor's plea for a first-degree or felony murder verdict, which would mean a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors had argued Portello hid her pregnancy out of shame and smothered the child after its unattended birth in the Plymouth Township, Mich., home she shared with her mother and brother.
"I feel justice was done," Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Lora Weingarden said. "Although it can't bring the baby back to life, her murderer is held accountable".
Portello's lawyer said the verdict was the wrong one.
