Inspired Europe open three-point lead over United States

(CNN) -- An inspired European team grabbed a three-point lead over the United States ahead of the concluding singles after dominating the fourballs and foursomes play in the 38th Ryder Cup match at Celtic Manor on Sunday.
Trailing 6-4 overnight, Colin Montgomerie's men claimed five and half of the six points available as the United States team wilted under pressure.
Europe now hold a 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 lead going into the 12 singles matches which are being held on Monday for the first time in the 83-year-old history of the team golf event due to the continued poor weather conditions in Wales.
They require a further five points to win back the coveted trophy which the United States hold after a thumping victory at Valhalla in 2008.
Sunday's play was held up while green staff mopped up after heavy overnight rain, but soon the scoreboard was awash with European blue.
