Israeli court to rule on Nobel laureate

JERUSALEM, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- An Israeli court will decide if Irish 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire will be permitted to enter the country or be deported, officials said.

Maguire was detained by Israel Police Tuesday when she attempted to enter Israel despite a 10-year ban she agreed to when detained in June for participating in a flotilla to Gaza, which Israel ruled was illegal. After she signed the document she was deported.

Since Tuesday, she has been held in a detention facility at Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel Radio said.

Maguire is being represented by the Adalah organization, the legal center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. A lawyer assigned to represent her told Israel Radio she intended to demand from the court that Maguire be released from detention. She said her client had been misled when she agreed to refrain from visiting Israel for 10 years.

On Tuesday, McGuire refused to board a flight home and reportedly rejected efforts to being forcefully placed on the flight. The captain of the plane also objected to Maguire being forcefully put on board, and refused to fly until she was taken off the flight, the radio said.
