FORT KNOX, Ky., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The National Weather Service predicted a chance of showers Monday in Kentucky's Fort Knox area where a series of wildfires burned through the weekend.
Tracer rounds fired during training exercises are believed to have started the fires at the U.S. Army base in northern Kentucky. The flames spread quickly due to gusty winds and dry conditions.
Firefighters and Kentucky Air National Guard helicopters carried out more than 80 water drops around the rural base during the weekend, base officials told The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal.
The newspaper said smoke from the fires had become a concern in southwest Jefferson County where air-quality levels dipped into the "unhealthy" range.
