(CNN) -- A British aid worker who died while being held hostage in eastern Afghanistan was killed by an explosion when one of her captors detonated an explosive device, authorities said Sunday.
There is nothing to suggest that fire from troops played a role in Linda Norgrove's Friday night death, which came during a rescue attempt U.S. soldiers, British government sources said. The sources said the explosion likely stemmed from a suicide vest held by one of the hostage takers.
"Ms. Norgrove was killed when one of her captors detonated an explosive device he was carrying," said Lt. Col. John Dorrian, spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. "He was in close proximity to her so the blast fatally wounded her." However, Dorrian said he could not confirm the device was a suicide vest.
Norgrove, 36, who had been held hostage since late last month, worked for DAI, an agency that provides various services to developing nations. She spent much of her career managing projects for farmers and rural workers.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement Saturday that Norgrove "was doing valuable work for the Afghan people".
