The ruling United Russia party will present a list of candidates for Moscow mayor to President Dmitry Medvedev on October 9, State Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov said on Monday.
The party's general committee will convene on Friday night or Saturday morning to agree a final list of three or four hopefuls, Gryzlov said.
Medvedev fired long-time Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov last week, saying he had "lost confidence" in him. Luzhkov's deputy, Vladimir Resin, was appointed acting mayor.
A dozen senior officials have been tipped for one of the top jobs in Russia.
The Kremlin's envoy to the North Caucasus, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin, touted by some as the most likely replacement, has said he is ready to fill the vacant seat "if the president says so".
