U.S. may stop aid to some Pakistani troops

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Pakistani army units tied to prisoner or civilian abuses during recent offensives against the Taliban won't get U.S. assistance, the Obama administration said.

The threatened cutoff of monetary and resource aid comes as tensions grow between the United States and Pakistan, which is seen as a crucial partner in a campaign against al-Qaida and other terror groups, The New York Times reported Friday.

The White House hasn't told Pakistan of its decision, senior officials said. However, Pakistani military and civilian leaders are in Washington for a series of meetings, officials from both countries said.

Officials told the Times the decision would affect at least some U.S.-supported Pakistani Army and special operations troops that have conducted offensives against Taliban fighters in the Swat Valley and South Waziristan.

The administration briefed several senior members of Congress, but it has not provided details about which Pakistani military units would be affected by the suspension, the Times said.
