(CNN) -- A flood at a coal mine in China's Sichuan province trapped 28 workers Sunday, state media reported.
Thirteen people made it safely to the surface after an accident at the Batian Coal Mine in Neijiang, safety officials told the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The accident occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday (10 p.m. ET Saturday), Xinhua said.
The condition of the trapped miners was unclear several hours after the accident, according to the news agency.
Mine accidents are common in China. In 2009, 2,631 people were killed in such accidents.
In April, the country launched a campaign to inspect safety regulations in mines and other industries that have had serious accidents.
