Air Force stealth fighter crashed

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The wreckage of a U.S. Air Force F-22 jet that crashed while on a training mission in Alaska was found Wednesday, a Pentagon spokesman said.

The pilot was still missing, however.

Debris from the aircraft was found near Denali National Park.

Air Force spokesman Gary Strasburg said the pilot of the single-seat stealth fighter lost contact with air traffic control 7:40 p.m. Alaska time Tuesday during the routine training flight, CNN reported.

Search-and-rescue aircraft, synchronized by the Alaska Air National Guard Rescue Coordination Center, were sent to an area northeast of Cantwell, Alaska, the last known location of the airplane.

"Right now, our top priority is to try to bring the pilot home safely," said Col. Jack McMullen, 3rd Wing commander. "We will continue to search until we find our pilot. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this missing airman".

The pilot's name is being withheld.
