Arrests in Conn. over sports betting ring

HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Police in Connecticut say they've arrested 13 people, including the host of a radio talk show, in connection with an illegal sports betting operation.

Authorities say the gambling ring operated in and around Hartford, and was involved in betting on several sports, college as well as professional, the Hartford Courant reported Wednesday.

Among those arrested was Sebastian, real name Joseph Schlosser, the host of "WTIC's Pregame Blitz" on Monday and Thursday evenings, the newspaper said.

The call-in radio show, in which Schlosser frequently talked about betting on games, is broadcast live before weeknight NFL games carried by WTIC radio.

"The show won't be on tomorrow," station operations manager Steven Salhany said Wednesday night. "I have to decline further comment at this point".

Schlosser, 62, faces charges of professional gambling and transmitting gambling information.

Also arrested was Wolcott, Conn., town councilman Randy Petroniro, who resigned from the position Tuesday.

The arrests came after a yearlong investigation involving the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force and the chief state's attorney's office, the Courant reported.
