PONTIAC, Mich., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- The attorney for a woman charged with causing a crash that killed a Michigan woman she had feuded with on Facebook says he hopes to reach a deal for his client.
Torrie L. Emery, 23, is charged with second-degree murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and child abuse, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Police said Emery drove her car into a vehicle driven by Alesha Abernathy, 21, on July 21, and that Abernathy died when she crashed into a truck after running a red light to escape from Emery.
The two reportedly feuded over a man now in prison. Both women were Pontiac residents.
Emery was charged with child abuse because her 3-year-old daughter was in the car with her at the time of the incident.
Emery is set to stand trial Dec. 13, but her attorney, Michael McCarthy, told Oakland County Circuit Judge Wendy Potts Wednesday he hopes to avoid a trial.
"It's our position that she never intended to kill anyone," said Emery's attorney, Michael McCarthy.
"There is really no offer or commitment on the table, but we're in a situation where we're talking".
If convicted, Emery faces life in prison.
