LONDON, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Judges ruled in favor of Britain's Ministry of Defense in a case involving nuclear tests conducted in the South Pacific in the 1950s, officials said.
The judges said veterans who filed claims couldn't prove the tests caused cancer, skin defects and fertility problems and that nine out of the 10 claims were filed outside the legal time limit, the BBC reported. The disposition of the 10th case was not reported.
Ten of 1,011 service members taking part in nuclear testing in mainland Australia, the Montebello Islands off the west Australian coast and on Christmas Island in the South Pacific filed test cases, claiming illnesses.
The Ministry of Defense said it was appreciative of their service and acknowledged a "debt of gratitude" but denied it was negligent.
