Fighter jet pilot ejects; plane crashes

COLD LAKE, Alberta, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A Canadian Forces pilot ejected from his CF-18 fighter jet moments before the plane crashed in northern Alberta near Cold Lake, officials said.

The pilot was trying to land the plane at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake Wednesday just before midnight when something went awry, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"At approximately seven miles [11 kilometres] from landing, something happened and the pilot was forced to eject out of the aircraft. We're not sure what it was, at this time it would be purely speculative," Capt. Keith Hoey, at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in eastern Ontario, said.

After a 90-minute search, the pilot was found safe, but the jet was destroyed on impact, Hoey said.

Transport Canada and military flight safety officials are investigating the incident, the CBC reported.
