Japan's justice minister resigns

TOKYO, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Japanese Justice Minister Minoru Yanagida said Monday he is quitting after getting in hot water over comments he made about interacting with Japan's Parliament.

After meeting with Prime Minister Naota Kan, Yanagida announced Monday he was stepping down, Kyodo News reported.

"The prime minister told me to understand that for the public good, the government needs to have an extra budget for fiscal 2010 pass the Diet as soon as possible," Yanagida told reporters.

Yaganida's recent comments were generally seen as being dismissive of his responsibility to respond to Diet questioning. The furor only added to the criticism of the Kan administration on domestic and foreign issues, Kyodo said.
