Korea monitoring foreigners during summit

SEOUL, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- South Korean police said Friday they are watching certain foreigners for suspicious activity during next week's Group of 20 summit.

Of some 50,000 foreigners from 57 nations residing in South Korea, the National Police Agency told Yonhap it is monitoring 98 whose purposes of stay are unclear or who have a history of often changing address.

Police officials said they are routinely confirming these persons' residential addresses and places of employment and checking whether they engage in activities violating their stated purposes of residence.

Police also are screening airports for terrorist suspects and working with other countries to exchange information on terrorist organizations and protesters, officials said.

The NPA said it has banned the entry of 2,713 terrorist suspects from 69 nations with a list from Interpol and 119 suspects wanted by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency.

Altogether, the NPA said, the government is barring about 5,000 people from the country, including 184 protesters who were arrested during the G20 Pittsburgh summit in September last year.
