London issues travel warning for Guinea

LONDON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- London warns against all but essential travel in Guinea after riots broke out following election results announced this week, the British foreign office said.

The electoral commission announced Monday that former Prime Minister Cellou Diallo lost to political leader Alpha Conde. More than 60 people were wounded in fighting Monday between Diallo supporters and security forces following the announcement.

Diallo said backers of his rival were attacking his supporters with the help of security forces who are targeting members of his ethnic group.

Both leaders, however, have called on their backers to remain calm.

P.J. Crowley, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters during his regular briefing that both sides needed to take any claims of legitimacy to the appropriate legal authorities.

"We encourage both Conde and Diallo to urge their supporters to remain calm and allow the court to evaluate any irregularities," he said.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was warning British nationals that demonstrations can turn violent at a moment's notice.
