Prince concerned about hajj hygiene

MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Saudi Prince Khalid al-Faisal says he is concerned about hygiene, overcrowding and cleanliness during the annual hajj.

The hajj, or pilgrimage, draws millions of Muslims to holy sites and is the world's largest annual religious pilgrimage.

"We have a lot of concerns about people sleeping outdoors, the unofficial hajis (pilgrims), cleanliness and hygiene of the holy places," al-Faisal said told a news conference in Mina, one of the holy sites.

Al-Faisal said officials should rethink how they deal with the massive pilgrimage, the British newspaper The Guardian reported.

"This is our priority -- both mine and the custodian of the holy mosques himself," al-Faisal said. "But the most important issue, which the custodian of the holy mosques (King Abdullah bin Abdul Ariz) himself has spoken about, is the issue of overcrowding along the Mecca-Mina route and in the haram (Grand Mosque) area itself".

The newspaper said the smell surrounding the holy sites, especially Arafat, Mina and Muzdalifah, has been unbearable.
