'Sweaty bandit' allegedly robs Calif. bank

LAGUNA WOODS, Calif., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A man referred to as the "sweaty back bandit" and suspected of two previous robberies allegedly held up a California bank, police said.

The alleged robber of the bank in Laguna Woods Wednesday is believed to have robbed a bank in Newport Beach bank Nov. 2, as well as one in San Clemente Sept. 16, The Orange County Register reported.

The man gave a teller a note saying he was carrying a gun, though no weapon was visible, Lt. Mike Jansen of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

The suspect was last seen running toward a nearby freeway. Witnesses saw no vehicle involved, Jansen said.

Police started calling the man the "sweaty back bandit" after a bank robbery Rancho Santa Margarita where surveillance cameras caught the man as he walked toward a teller. The tape showed the man had perspired through a blue shirt, the Register reported.
