Teen arrested in two Iowa holdup killings

ALGONA, Iowa, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A Minnesota teenager killed two women in a crime spree in northern Iowa, police allege.

Michael Swanson, 17, was laughing as he walked from the Kossuth County Jail to the courthouse for his initial appearance Tuesday, The Des Moines (Iowa) Register reported. Asked why, Swanson shook his head and said, "Y'all are funny," the report said.

Police say Swanson shot and killed convenience store clerks Vicky Bowman-Hall, 47, and Sheila Myers, 61, in robberies in Algona and Humboldt Monday.

He allegedly said he shot the women on purpose so they could not call police or identify him, according to affidavits police filed.

Swanson of St. Louis Park, Minn., left home Sunday night with his mother's debit card and her 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Minnesota juvenile court records show.

Relatives told police he drove to the family cabin in Bigfork, Minn., broke in and took a .300 Winchester rifle and possibly other weapons.
