SAN DIEGO, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- More than 20 tons of marijuana were discovered in a smuggling tunnel dug between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, authorities said Wednesday.
U.S. law enforcement officials said the 600-yard tunnel, complete with a rail system, lighting and ventilation, connected warehouses on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Authorities have found about 125 tunnels linking the two countries since they started keeping track in the early 1990s, the newspaper said. Most of them have been in California and Arizona.
"What's unusual about this one is the amount of marijuana found as part of this investigation," U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack told CNN.
The Los Angeles Times reported U.S. and Mexican personnel took part in raids on the tunnel Tuesday and Wednesday. No arrests were made on the Mexican side and it wasn't clear if anyone had been taken into custody in San Diego.
