U.S. calls for calm in Guinea

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Political leaders in Guinea must call on their supporters to refrain from violence, the U.S. State Department said after the country descended into violence.

Guinea declared a state of emergency following Monday's provisional announcement of presidential election results.

Preliminary results showed former Prime Minister Cellou Diallo lost to political leader Alpha Conde. Clashes erupted between Diallo supporters and security forces after the election announcement, leaving more than 60 people injured.

The former prime minister said supporters of Conde were attacking his supporters with the help of security forces who were targeting members of his ethnic group.

The U.S. State Department condemned the conflicts, saying political violence has no place in democratic society.
