Canada expands cheese recall

MONTREAL, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Processed cheese slices recalled by a Canadian firm for possible Listeria contamination may have been used to make sandwiches, Canadian health officials say.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it is now working with various manufacturers and retailers to identify and remove all affected sandwich products made with recalled cheese slices produced by Saputo Inc. of Montreal, Postmedia News reported Tuesday.

So far no illnesses associated with the processed cheese has been reported, health officials said.

Manufacturers and retailers in Canada have been voluntarily recalling products made with Saputo's processed cheese since the first warning was issued last month.

Food contaminated with the bacteria is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck and nausea. UPI
